Fall Course: Befriending Our Bodies

An online Insight Yoga course for women in midlife and beyond longing for a more compassionate relationship with their bodies.

About This Course
Very few of us were taught to befriend our bodies. Instead, we were born into a culture that too often profits from our dissatisfaction with them.

From an early age, we absorb countless messages about how our bodies should look, move, perform, age, and be. No matter the shape, size, age, or ability of our bodies, many of us carry legacy burdens that leave us judging, pushing, ignoring, or trying to fix the very bodies through which we experience our lives.

What if Our Bodies Have Never Been the Problem?
Our bodies are extraordinary. They breathe us, heal us, adapt to change, sense our environment, and carry us through heartbreak, delight, loss, and love. They are not problems to solve or projects to perfect, but living, changing companions—our precious home in this one wild and beautiful life.

This autumn, we invite you on a body-heart-mind journey to befriend your body. We are experienced and endorsed Insight Yoga teachers Erinbell Fanore and Sarah Jane Shangraw, and our methods include dharma teachings, awareness and compassion practices, yoga, and inquiry.

Together we will begin to recognize and unburden the beliefs and protective patterns that have shaped our relationships with our bodies. Rather than trying to fix ourselves, we'll cultivate curiosity, compassion, and trust—gently shifting our relationships from judgment to friendship, and from friendship to awe.

Along the way, we'll also make space for wonder, laughter, and the freedom that comes from not taking ourselves quite so seriously.

Join Us Online this Fall for 4 Weekly Sessions:
  • September 27: The Stories We Carry - Unburdening Body Beliefs

  • October 4: The Amazing Human Body - Rediscovering the Wonder

  • October 11: From Judgment to Listening - Befriending the Inner Critic
  • October 18: Friendship, Freedom, and Awe - Caretaking this New Relationship

Embrace the Wonder of Embodiment
Many of us have been taught that our bodies are against us. We try to control them, discipline them, or push them toward an ideal—often as a way of easing the discomfort we feel around change, vulnerability, and uncertainty.

But our bodies are not machines to perfect. They are living, changing, beautifully complex companions. They get tired. They get sick. Often, they heal. They age. They experience pleasure. They surprise us. They remind us that being human is a messy, mysterious, and sometimes hilarious experience.

The good news is that we can learn a different way of relating—to our bodies, to ourselves, and to life itself.  Through somatic mindfulness and compassion practices woven together from ancient yogic and Buddhist lineages, as well as Internal Family Systems, we can learn to:
  • Loosen the grip of old beliefs and expectations
  • Listen to our bodies with curiosity, kindness, and respect
  • Meet ourselves with compassion rather than criticism
  • Find more ease, wonder, and even humor in being human
